Beginners Guide To Woodworking and Sheds

Working on a woodworking project is always fun even though it may have its frustrating moments. After all, in most cases it is a hobby and one that is suppose to be enjoyable. The greatest anticipation and driving force is the anticipation of the finished product. There is something gratifying in having that almost finished project in front of you ready for the finishing touches. It has been a great project, everything turned out perfect now comes the final decision which is how do you finish it off?

There are so many choices of finishes and tints how do you know which one is going to be the best for this particular piece. It is somewhat stressful at this point because you have done a lot of hard work and the piece is perfect it would be most disappointing if you ruined it at this stage. So take a deep breath and tackle the job head-on.

The object itself is partly going to help you determine what type of finish you are going to use. If it?s a usable object that perhaps could get market up then you need to think a little differently regarding your finish. For example, a table or countertop is going to have things set on it all the time. Hot and cold items as well as items that could stain the wood. In this case, you need a durable protective finish. At this point, we have not even considered the esthetics part of it. That comes next. You need to decide if you are going to use a stain or leave the wood natural. Finally it comes down to what?s easiest for you and what do you feel most comfortable doing. If you are a novice to woodworking then you need to find the easiest products to work with in the simplest fashion and application.

Again, when it comes to the durability and protective coating that you are going to use you will find many of them on the market but again it?s going to depend on your project. We talked about what tables and countertops are exposed to so you will need a protective coating that is going to withstand this. Then if it?s outdoor furniture or d?cor that you have done then it?s got different requirements for a protective finishing. The same applies for food items such as salad bowls and steak plates. The finishes that you use on these must be food safe. Whatever one you decide on don?t cut corners and be absolutely sure that you have followed the manufacturers directions and have applied as many coats as required.

Naturally, you know that the stains are going to change the color but also keep in mind that the protective coatings will also alter the color somewhat. If you are using the water base protective coatings then it won?t be as much of an issue as with the other types.

It is always a good idea to check with your home improvement center where you buy your products. They have good feedback as well as product knowledge and will be able to give you some good first hand knowledge about the products you are thinking of buying.

A Beginners Guide To Wood Finishing – Woodworking Tips

When it comes time to finish your project you need to know that for wood treatments it is either stain, paints or finish. They are each providing a different outcome. To tint the wood you would use wood stains. Paints sit on the wood and protect it. Some finishes are pretty much paint without any color added to it. They are the ones that give that clear protection.

Probably one of the most well known finishes is varnish. It?s a great finish because the more layers you use the stronger the finish. The major problem with varnish is it dries slowly which increases the chance for dust to get into the finish. If possible, try to do your finishing work in an area where there is the least amount of dust.

A mixture of resins and synthetics boiled together is what makes varnish. If you are using polyurethane?s then you are simply using a varnish that has had a polyurethane resin added to it. When you are using a varnish that contains a higher quantity of oil, it makes the product more flexible and this is known as Spar varnish, which makes it perfect for outdoor use because of it flexing properties.

If you are going to use varnish as your finishing product then you need to know how to apply it properly. Working in a dust free room is a priority. Then using a tack cloth wipe down your project as it must be perfectly clean. Put some of your varnish into a container that you can work out of .That way if it becomes contaminated with dust you can just discard that amount. Apply the varnish using long steady strokes with a brush working in the grain direction. Tip off your brush strokes. Wed sand in between coats with fine sandpaper.

There is also wiping varnish but read the labels carefully before using this product to be sure that it is varnish and not tung oil.

Then there are oil and varnish blends. They work similar to an oil finish but have a bit more protection to them but they are not for building layers.

Shellac is a natural resin but not is as durable as the others are. It?s not good for items such as kitchen counter or cabinets for example. It is a fast drying product though and you can get it in various colors.

Lacquer is usually applied with a spray gun but the fumes can be dangerous and the dry dust is explosive.

There are some really good what are labeled as water based finishes but they all have a certain amount of solvent in them. Their two weaknesses is they show brush marks and they bubble when you are applying them so use a synthetic brush for this.

Proper sanding between coats of your finish is one of your most important steps. Be sure to use fine sandpaper. The sanding removes bumps and uneven spots. Especially made sandpaper for wet sanding is ideal. Really, take the time to research the various finishes you are going to use to get the best application and intended use from them.

Michael Jackson’s Bollywood connection

Michael Jackson’s death has left a huge dent in Bollywood. The legendary king of Pop and a performer par excellence inspired numerous actors and musicians the world over, including Bollywood. Be it his trademark fashion sense, his groovy dance steps and his attitude-all of them caught the frenzy of Bollywood.

* People like Mithun Chakraborty and Govinda were the ‘desi Michael Jacksons’ in the early part of their careers thanks to their dance themed films which had moves that were lifted from MJ’s videos. Michael Jackson in a way, had contributed to the career graphs of many Bollywood actors who emulated his style and moves.

* Michael Jackson’s visit to Mumbai,in the year 1996 was met with a super reception. None of the international performer in India have been able to replicate and whip up the frenzy which Michael Jackson had created.

* Michael Jackson inspired Bollywood comedian Johnny Lever to create numerous parodies on the musical genius. In fact, Johnny Lever’s best act is a take off on ‘they don’t really care about us’ from MJ’s album-History

* The video ‘Thriller’ which has won numerous awards and is easily the best music video ever(without special effects, mind you) inspired quite a few horror scenes and horror sequences in films, both Bollywood and Hollywood. * Hrithik Roshan was the last big Bollywood star who had last met Michael Jackson. He had met him in the US while shooting for Kites. However Hrithik though mesmerized by MJ’s aura, could make out that the man was frail by ill-health

Learn To Make Wooden Frames Easily and Quickly

Making a wooden frame yourself is not as difficult as it seems. Imagine how beautiful your photos or posters will look if there is a wooden frame around it. There are framers that can do this for you but you will save lots by doing it yourself.

You may not have the tools to do the custom work or the expertise, buy you do have the ability to make a very acceptable frame with the tools you already have and a few how to instructions. If you have, a table saw, a router and a few bits then you are on your way.

When you are sizing your frame, you are going to have to take into consideration the size and thickness of your matting for the picture. Keep in mind as well that the larger the frame is then the side pieces must be appropriately as wide as well to work with the over all balance of the picture.

First, you are going to need to cut your pieces of your ?-inch solid stock wood. You are going to cut two pieces but tack on an extra 3 inches to the length of each piece so you will have it to work with when you make your adjustments.

For the width of your frame pieces, you need to double the measurement and add 1/2inch. This also will allow for adjustments.

So now you have cut the pieces for your height and length, you will need to choose which profile bits you are going to use with your router. As you probably know there are several styles and you probably already have a selection of them to choose from. In this case, it?s a matter of individual choice and preference.

Now what you need to do with your chosen profile bit you are going to need to make the frame profile. You need to rout the face of the frame, which means it?s the good side.

The area where the glass sits inside the frame is called the rabbet profile. It?s suggested you use a 3/8 inch rabbet.

Finally, you are ready to star ripping the pieces to the width measurement that you wanted. Once you have done this, you will now have four pieces.

On the outside frame pieces, you need to make the cove edge. This is the last pass that is needed.

Now you have all of your profiling done you can go ahead and cut the frame with your miter saw or your table saw.

Once you are sure you have cut the frame to the proper size you have to fasten the joints. You can choose which technique you want here. You can use tack plates if you like but not on hardwood. Consider corrugated nails or chevrons for this. If you are familiar with working with biscuits this method may be good to use in some cases.

Use a picture frame clamp to hold your pieces together for drying. You should also consider reinforcing the joints with dowel plugs to give your frame good strength.

Learn How To Bend Wood Easily – Woodworking Plans

How many times have you gone and purchased a piece of wood and got it home and cursed it because it has a bend it in. Then as you move along into your woodworking hobby, you discover that there are times that; you wish you could bend the wood. Well actually, you can and there are a few methods not all that difficult to do to help you achieve this. There are methods such steam bending or microwave steaming. Then there are Kerf cut bending or laminated wood bending, so you can see there are a few options ahead of you.

Don?t even think about attempting to bend wood without a form. When you have removed the treated wood from the steam box you need to get it clamped into place as quickly as possible and that?s where the form comes into play. You can easily make your own forms with several layers of MDF.

Now let?s look at micro waving wood. Naturally you aren?t going to get a big piece of wood into your microwave so this is just for small pieces. Wrap the piecedin a wet paper towel and nuke it for only a few seconds. It works just like a steam box. You will have to experiment with the time because of the variations in the wood.

The most tried and true method for wood bending is the steam method. You will need to make a steam box so you need a heat source, a container to hold the water, which is going to be heated, and a hose for the steam to pass through. A separate box is needed for the wood that is going to be treated. For your heat source it doesn?t have to be anything elaborate it cane even be a hot plate. Nothing with open flames though. A teakettle makes a great water container but you have to be able to modify it so you can add a hose to it.

For the steam box, you can use any type of pipe or wooden box that you construct yourself. The steam has to be able to escape though or you will end up with an explosion. You must be very careful not to get burnt when doing this the steam is extremely hot and heats up everything. Make sure you wear gloves. Again making sure that you, steam has a way of escaping you can start off with about an hour of this treatment; you may need more again depending on the variation of the wood.

Laminated wood is much easier to bend because of its thickness. You will need the form but not the other equipment. Make sure the piece you are bending is longer than you need and it must be thin. Then you just glue the layers together as you stack them in the form and clamp them. Once dry trim the edges.

Kerf cut bending is just a simple procedure of cutting slots across the wood. These are done on the inside of the bend.

Learning A Guitar Solo From Tab

When we learn guitar solos, we have the choice between learning the music from conventional music notation or from guitar tab. Although tab was used for all music in past ages it has become popular as guitar notation because people who were attracted to playing the guitar were very often not attracted to spending time learning music theory and how to read sheet music.

Quite often, a newbie guitarist’s inspiration to learn to play the guitar is the lead guitar player in a famous band. Hearing a great solo guitar player at work raises so many questions about the techniques he uses, the tone and volume settings, and where he gets those great guitar solos from.

In this age of instant gratification, you can find the tab for a guitar solo almost as soon as the song is released. To take advantage of the tabs on the internet you need to be aware that the guitar tab can tell you one thing: the notes that the guitarist is playing in the solo.

If you play the tab through you may not agree with the notes that are on the tab, so this is the time to make any changes that you feel are necessary. Once you feel that the guitar solo tab corresponds to your hearing of the solo on the CD version of the song, you need to check the fingering that is given.

If the guitar tab has been written manually using Notepad or a similar text editor, the fingering given will have been worked out by the guitarist who wrote the tab. If you are using a file from some guitar editing software like Powertab, you need to check the fingering thoroughly to make sure it is easy for you to play.

The reason you need to check the fingering is that tab editing programs have no idea what it feels like to have fingers, and if you follow the computer-generated fingering, you might be in for some unnecessary acrobatics. So remember to keep it simple.

So, there is no harm in being flexible in interpreting the tab for any guitar solo. If you feel that what’s on the tab does not sound quite right, go with what you have. Once you’re familiar with the music, the correct notes or chord will probably come to you. Also, do not be afraid to take liberties with any guitar solo you are learning. When you are up there playing the music on your guitar, it will be YOUR solo, so you can change it to make it your own if you like.

How Do I Reduce Dust Buildup In Woodworking

Almost everything we do whether it is work or recreational has some type of safety factors that apply to it and woodworking is no different. Apart from the tools, there are the environmental hazards to be concerned with and here it would be the workshop dust. You may notice that many of the newer tools that you may have purchased are paying attention to dust control as well. Although you are not going to be dust free when working with wood there is much you can about it to keep it under control.

Although there are several reasons why you would want to control the dust in your shop one of the most important is the effect it can have on your health. Going back a few years many persons that worked with wood would not wear any type of protection. Many of them suffer health wise today because of this. Some complain of respiratory or breathing problems. Nowadays to prevent this sort of problem most woodworkers will wear a respirator. There are many potential health problems that can surface from not wearing one of these and it?s just not worth the risk.

Dust meaning sawdust in your work area is also a fire concern. This is one area that many don?t realize or even think about. It must be remembered that the sawdust is a residue of flammable material, which is wood. When it is ignited, it burns with strength and quickly. When the air becomes so thick with this dust it only takes the slightest spark from one of your tools to create an explosion. This not a common occurrence but can occur never the less. A greater risk is the sawdust laying around being ignited by a spark.

Sawdust has a tendency to make a concrete or wood floor very slippery. This is an accident waiting to happen.

Then there are other side effects of the dust like it ending up in your finishes or getting into your tools and shortening their functionality. You may not have had your tools for any great length of time yet they are virtually ruined by the sawdust.

Aside from being astute at cleaning up the sawdust because of your health and what it does to your projects and tools there may be actual regulations in place. This most often only applies to the commercial sector. The rules are strict though and the woodworking shop industry must abide by them. It?s not only for the safety of the people working there but for the purposes of a fire as well.

It only makes sense that anyone working with wood would want to take the same precautions with their health in the other areas they are exposed to besides the risk of tool injury. One must be astute and alert for any type of potential danger that exists or could exist that could be controlled.

Posture Supports – Why They Don’t Work

Posture supports can be found in many places now. Many people are choosing to use them, thinking they will improve their posture. The truth is, they don’t. They do have their place, but they don’t do anything to improve your posture.

Many of us have poor posture after years of slumping in our chairs. A lot of the furniture that is popular today encourages slumping instead of good posture. After so many years, our bodies have adapted to our new slumped shapes. Now that you want to have good posture, it is nowhere to be found. You may go online in search of things to help you learn to improve your posture. What you find are many sites selling posture supports. Great! Just strap one on or use one with your chair and you’ll be standing proud! Wrong.

Suppose you buy that posture support and decide to wear it all day long. Let’s say your back is at 100% strength when you do so. The support adds another 10% to your strength. You feel great. Your back feels perfect and supported. Your muscles are relaxed and don’t need to do a lick of work all day long.

After a few days of this vacation, your back muscles have lost some strength. You may not notice it yet, because that posture support makes you feel great! After a few months, your back muscles are all soft from letting the support do all the work. Now, even with the support, your back hurts! Why did this happen?

In order to keep your muscles strong, your muscles need to work. By letting them have all that time off, they have atrophied to a certain extent. They have lost muscle mass, and they just tire out much faster. It is time to take that support off and make your muscles work again. After several months of making your back muscles work to support you, they are stronger. Are they where they were when you started? Maybe. Even to get them to improve a little bit takes time dedicated to strengthening exercises and rehabilitation. Are you doing any of that?

There are some circumstances when a posture support is warranted. If you have had an injury and your back is in great pain, such as a herniated disc or other issue, then you should probably use a support for awhile. But that isn’t the end of it. Even with a medical excuse for using the support, once you’ve had the issue addressed, you need to deal with the additional issue of a weakened back. You may need chiropractic adjustments, some resting time, and some rehabilitation exercises. The support is only there for when you need it. Kind of like how a person with a broken bone wears a cast until the bone is healed. After that, to build up strength in those muscles again, they must do rehabilitation exercises to get them back into shape.

If you truly want to fix your posture, you’ll need to do exercises to work on your back muscles and your posture. Evaluate what you do every day that contributes to your bad posture. Be dedicated to making progress.

Michael Jackson: the Significance of His Thrilling Career

When I first heard the news that Michael Jackson had died I immediately dismissed it. I thought it was a cruel rumor that was being circulated. I got into the elevator with a black woman who looked visibly shaken and I asked her did she hear about it. She confirmed that it was true. He was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. on June 25, 2009.

As the elevator sank toward the ground floor, my heart sunk with it. Like most black people, I felt as though I had lost a childhood friend. Losing a childhood friend can be more painful than losing a distant relative because of the historical bond you share. When a childhood friend dies, a part of your life dies with them. Such was the case for me and millions of others who had the pleasure of growing up with Michael Jackson.

Unlike any artist in history, Michael Jackson was able to cast a wide net of popularity over generations of people which cut through genres, cultures, nations, races, and all ages. It was a feat that will likely never be accomplished again. His influence is readily seen in today’s top contemporary music artists like Usher, Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown, and Ne-Yo.

They share some similarities, but they will never be on Michael Jackson’s level.

I’ve heard the term “superstar” used to describe Michael Jackson along with similar descriptions such as “megastar,” and “worldwide superstar” because of his recognition around the globe. Those references fall short because they are too complex. He is simply the greatest entertainer that ever lived. He’s also the most underrated vocalist of our time.

He picked up where James Brown left off with his pure, powerful soulfulness and unsurpassed dancing skills. James Brown had moves. Michael Jackson had moves and choreography. He mesmerized white teenage audiences with greater effect than Elvis. Elvis had charm. Michael Jackson had charm and unprecedented energy. He crossed over and was embraced by white audiences in a way that Prince had only dreamed of. Prince had crossover appeal. Michael Jackson had crossover appeal and successfully crossed over. Young children were also drawn to and excited by Michael Jackson and his music in an inexplicable way that no music artist has ever been able to come close to. That’s what made him the greatest.

But now he’s gone. Never to be forgotten, and never to be replaced. Gone are the possibilities for a comeback that so many of us were hoping for. Gone are the chances for musical, commercial, and social redemption.

As strongly as I’m tempted to point out the derisive treatment of Michael Jackson over the years by white people I have to cautiously refrain, but his original fan base (and most loyal in the U.S.) consisted of the black families who, at least visually, resembled his own. At a time when when black pride was wavering, Michael Jackson made every young black boy in America feel that they too could be viewed as “cute”; if they had the requisite afro and psychedelic 70s attire.

White people also loved Michael Jackson. They recognized and rewarded his talents and creativity when he was allowed to be the first black artist to have a video played on MTV; a move that positioned him as the King Of Pop and ignited record sales of Thriller, the best selling album of all time.

Michael Jackson is as much a part of their lives – and occupies as big of a space in their hearts – as he does in the hearts of most black people; however, it’s the white media that has shown irreverence for the last decade by dogging him at every given chance.

By choosing to focus on his eccentricities (to which Michael Jackson responded with his song, Leave Me Alone), prosecuting him in the court of public opinion after he was legally acquitted for molestation, and disparagingly referring to him as “Wacko Jacko,” the white media certainly contributed to his mounting stress over the years, and short-term exile from the U.S.

Michael Jackson was not physically well, nor physically fit. We took for granted the amount of preparation, discipline, energy, and hard work that he put into being the greatest entertainer that ever lived. The trait of all professionals is how easy they make things look. Michael Jackson performances were well-rehearsed, and characterized by flawless precision and timing. He made them look easy, but they were a physically demanding and often exhaustive undertaking; one that a younger, healthier Michael Jackson was conditioned to executing.

The older, physically and mentally distressed Michael Jackson was never going to be able to honor 50 performance dates. It would have been the equivalent of Michael Jordan coming back at the age of 50 and trying to compete at the same (athletic) level in a playoff game; it’s just not possible. Drugs might make it seem possible, but only for a fleeting moment.

Entertainers, like athletes, have a hard time letting go of what once was, in exchange for what now is: a feeble body that can not generate the type of performance that the public has grown accustomed to seeing. Usually when it happens you step-down. But Michael Jackson attempted to step-up.

Still carrying the distinction as perhaps the last black artist who can sell out a stadium, and being painfully aware of his increasing physical limitations, he attempted to cater to the desires of his fiercely loyal fans just one more time. He would tour again and restore himself (and reputation) via the platform on which he is most comfortable, and the one that launched his illustrious career: the stage.

The This Is It Tour was set to begin in July, 2009.

Michael Jackson (who had not performed on this level in over 8 years) knew what the fans would be expecting: the old Michael Jackson. Like any polished professional who is aware of his brand, he attempted to deliver on those expectations. What medications/drugs he took (which may have jeopardized his health in order to honor those expectations) may never be known.

What is known is that Michael Jackson issued a call to action himself, in response to requests from his fans to honor them one more time with his physical presence. He agreed; but with the condition that this would be it.

So the man who created magical Pop music in the 70s that instantly transported people to happier times in their lives; defined an era; set the world on fire during his mesmerizing solo performance on the Motown 25 TV special with his “moonwalk” and single glitter glove in the 80s; legitimized music videos as an art form and valid promotional tool; and created songs that would be a part of the soundtrack to people’s lives, was set to thrill audiences once again.

But it was never to be.

In a time in which so many artists superficially blurt out “I love you” to their fans, Michael’s love of his fans, and his desire to satisfy them, defined his life, and my have possibly ended it. There will be documentaries, TV tributes, and movies to commemorate his life, but Michael’s legacy is his influence which (present and future) music artists will be affected by and measured against. And, of course, his sensational music catalogue which remains unparalleled and further distances his him from today’s “stars.” It contains songs that will carry on, in various incarnations, forever. As will our memories.

Rest in peace Michael Jackson. He truly deserves both the rest and the peace.
